FAQ

Where exactly is the swim finish and transition?
The swim takes place in Double Oak Lake, with transition located in a large grassy lot nearby within Oak Mountain State Park. Transition is very well marked but occupies a large footprint, so arrive early.
What is the terrain like for the mountain bike leg?
Oak Mountain is legendary for its 'Blood Rock' section and red clay soil. Expect tight singletrack, technical roots, and some punchy climbs. It is moderately technical but fast in dry conditions.
Is the swim wetsuit legal?
Historically, water temperatures in Double Oak Lake in late May hover around 21-23°C, making it a 'maybe' for wetsuit legality for age groupers. Always bring yours just in case.
Can I park at the swim start?
There is parking within the park, but it fills up extremely fast on race morning. Many athletes choose to be dropped off or arrive very early to secure a spot near the transition area.
What type of tires should I use?
A fast-rolling rear tire with a slightly more aggressive front tire is the standard setup for Alabama red clay. If it rains, the clay becomes very slick and 'greasy.'
Where is packet pickup?
Packet pickup normally occurs at the Oak Mountain State Park event site (Main Pavilion) the Friday and Saturday before the race.
Are there park entry fees?
Yes, Oak Mountain State Park usually charges a small daily per-person entry fee. Check if your registration includes a park pass or if you need cash/card at the gate.
