FAQ

How do I get to Queen Maud Land?
Athletes typically fly from Cape Town, South Africa, via a specialised Gulfstream or Il-76 transport plane to the Wolf's Fang or Novo runway. These are private charter flights managed by the race organisers.
What gear is mandatory for the race?
You must have a multi-layer system: base layer, fleece insulation, and a wind/waterproof outer shell. Face masks, goggles with cat-4 lenses, and high-altitude mittens are essential to prevent frostbite.
Is the course groomed?
The course is typically a marked loop on blue ice or hard-packed snow. However, drifting snow can occur, making parts of the course feel like running on soft sand.
What is the typical race day temperature?
Expect temperatures between -15°C and -25°C. Wind chill can easily drop these temperatures to -35°C, so skin coverage is the highest priority.
How do aid stations work in sub-zero temps?
Aid stations are heated tents spaced every 5-10km. They serve warm liquids and energy food that won't freeze solid (like chocolate or specific gels kept close to the body).
What happens if a blizzard occurs?
The race has a flexible window. If conditions are unsafe, the start time can be delayed by 24-48 hours. The race may be paused if visibility drops to zero.
