FAQ

Where is the packet pickup located?
Packet pickup usually takes place on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at Rancho Santa Elena or the central plaza in Huasca de Ocampo. Check the official athlete guide 2 weeks before for the specific window.
Is the swim in a lake or pool?
The swim is an open-water event in the cold-water reservoir at Rancho Santa Elena. Wetsuits are highly recommended as water temperatures typically hover around 16-18°C.
What is the terrain like for the mountain bike leg?
Expect technical singletrack with significant pine forest sections, loose dirt, and some steep volcanic rock climbs. A hardtail is doable, but a full-suspension MTB is preferred for the technical descents.
How do I get to Huasca de Ocampo from the airport?
The easiest way is to rent a car at Mexico City (MEX). The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Avoid driving at night due to narrow, winding mountain roads.
Are there shuttles to the venue?
There are no official shuttles. Athletes are expected to drive or cycle from Huasca town to Rancho Santa Elena. Parking at the venue is available but can be muddy if it rains.
What are the gear requirements for XTERRA Santa Elena?
MANDATORY: Mountain bike (no gravel bikes), helmet, and trail running shoes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Wetsuit for the cold swim and a bike repair kit with tubeless sealant.
Will there be altitude issues?
Yes, the race takes place at approximately 2,400m (7,800ft) above sea level. If you are coming from sea level, arrive at least 3 days early to acclimatize.
