FAQ

How do I handle the high altitude in Thimphu?
Thimphu is at 2,330m. It is highly recommended to arrive at least 3-4 days before the race to acclimatise. Hydrate more than usual and expect slower split times than at sea level.
Where is the packet pickup located?
Registration and bib collection usually take place at the Clock Tower Square or the Bhutan Olympic Committee office 1-2 days before the race.
Is there a mandatory gear list?
While not strictly trail, Bhutan's weather changes quickly. Carrying a light windbreaker and personal hydration is recommended as aid stations are spaced further apart than in flat city marathons.
What are the visa requirements for Bhutan?
All visitors (except India, Bangladesh, Maldives) require a visa and must pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). This is usually processed by your tour operator or through the official Department of Immigration portal.
Are there many hills on the marathon course?
The course is undulating with some significant climbs, particularly as you head towards the Buddha Dordenma area. It is not a Personal Best course due to the elevation changes and thin air.
What is the typical race day weather?
September is the end of the monsoon. Expect crisp, cool mornings (10°C) and mild afternoons (20°C). Humidity can be high if it rains, but skies are often clear.
