FAQ

What is the terrain like in Rothrock State Forest?
Extremely rocky and technical. It is famous for 'Pennsylvania rocks'—sharp, loose, and constant. High-traction shoes with a rock plate are highly recommended.
Where is the main race hub and packet pickup?
Typically centered around Tussey Mountain Ski & Recreation Area or Shingletown Gap. Check the final athlete guide for the specific bib collection schedule, usually starting Friday afternoon.
Are trekking poles allowed?
Yes, poles are permitted and highly recommended due to the steep, technical climbs and the strain of navigating 'rock gardens' over long distances.
Is there cell service on the course?
Service is very spotty once you descend into the valleys of Rothrock. Download offline maps and ensure your emergency contacts are aware of the dead zones.
What is the mandatory gear list?
As a UTMB event, you must carry a waterproof jacket, emergency blanket, whistle, and a minimum of 1L water capacity. Mandatory gear checks are performed at bib collection.
How do I get to the start line from downtown?
Most athletes drive to Tussey Mountain. There is ample parking, but it fills early. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is available in State College but can be hard to find at 5am.
