FAQ

How do I get to the start line?
Big Sur is a point-to-point course on a closed Highway 1. You MUST take the official event SHUTTLES from Monterey, Carmel, or select hotels between 3:30 AM and 4:30 AM. There is NO private parking or drop-off at the start.
Where is the packet pickup located?
Packet pickup takes place at the Health & Fitness Expo at the Monterey Conference Centre on Friday and Saturday. There is no race-day registration or pickup.
What is the course profile like?
Extremely challenging and hilly. The most famous climb is Hurricane Point at mile 10, a 2-mile steady ascent. The course features significant camber and frequent rolling hills until the finish.
Is there a time limit for the marathon?
Yes, there is a strict 6-hour time limit. This is calculated from the time the last runner crosses the start mat, as Highway 1 must be reopened to traffic by 1:00 PM.
What should I wear for race morning?
It is often cold (approx 7-9°C) and damp at the start in the Redwoods. Bring 'throwaway' clothes to stay warm while waiting for the gun; these are collected and donated to local charities.
Can I use headphones during the race?
While not banned, they are strongly discouraged. The race is a 'cupless' and sensory-heavy event; the winds can be high, and organizers want runners to be fully aware of their surroundings.
